Sex. Politics. Money. Scandal. Disgrace. Resignation. Welcome to Elliot Spitzer’s week.

As the New York Governor exits the political stage, watch for the next chapter in his public life: redemption, reform and renewed respect.

It’s pretty clear that his political life is toast but his public life is far from over. Assuming he doesn’t get arrested (he still might), he’ll be back in 18 to 24 months with a mea culpa tour and /or a book. His reputation was built as the guy that went after corporate crooks and that’s how he’ll enter the public sphere again – calling out the corporate fat cats. Look for him to enter the speaking circuit and be a regular talking head on cable news shows.

All the appearances will be tightly controlled, no one will ask him about his time at the Mayflower Hotel, and, eventually, the public will stop wondering. After a time (I say three years and a lot of appearances), people will see him and the first thought won’t be that this arrogant ass dropped $80k on hookers.

If he ever gets caught cuddling up to someone that charges by the hour again, then he’s done from public life forever. Americans will give you one pass. Not two.
