Say it ain’t so, Yelp

So, looks like social review site Yelp is in a little hot water.

Allegations are now floating around the Inter-tubes that it’s possible to get a bad review taken off Yelp — or at least moved down below the good ones — if you pay.

The East Bay Express ran this article noting sales calls from Yelp offering to remove/reposition negative reviews for $299/month. To answer, Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman posted a rebuttal on his company blog.

So, we have “you are” “no, you are” raging here. I’m anxious to see how it all shakes out. While online reviews are often just ugly diatribe, I’d like to think that Yelp is above extortionists like the Rip-Off Report (no link on purpose — don’t want to give that site even one extra incoming link!). If not, I hope they’re done.

Stay tuned. If I hear more, I’ll post it here.
