Disneyland Has Nothing on Us!

If you were to have asked me years ago what comes to mind when you say “Boulder,” I would’ve said “hairy armpits, sweatshirts, married middle aged men riding bikes — with their kids attached in strollers, and friendly people.” Ask me the same question today (now that I work in Boulder) and I would say  “technology, startups, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, skiing, eco-friendly and bicycles.”

I’ve only been working in Boulder for four months now and my perception of “Hippieville” took a complete 180 turn in a matter of weeks. So, to me, it comes as no surprise that Boulder hit the #1 spot for America’s “Best Town to Live Well” in Forbes Magazine.  Let’s continue to toot our horn by remembering that just last year Forbes put Boulder at the top of their “smartest cities” and “best-educated cities” lists. Work it Boulder! Clearly Boulder is doing something right. Feel free to tell people that used to think like me, “in your face!”

Forbes ranked 25 towns on median income; average commute; per capita venture capital funding; per capita number of small businesses, sole-proprietorships and start-ups; the percentage of the population with bachelor’s degrees or higher; the percentage of young and educated people, or those 25-34 with a bachelor’s degree or higher; and the percentage of foreign-born residents with a bachelor’s degree or higher. Again, not a shocker that we dominated in every category! According to Matt Woolsey, Forbes.com writer “Boulder is a consistent high performer in all our measures.”

Being new to the Boulder community I don’t know nearly half of what Boulder has to offer but from what I’ve seen, here’s MY short list of what I love the most: the ability to ride your bike to work starting anywhere in Boulder, unlimited networking possibilities (Boulder has made it nearly impossible to not make the right “connections,” so no excuses please), friendly people,  historic past — Happy 150th B-day Boulder, the world’s greatest fries from Spud Bros. and surreal scenery. I’d say Boulder is in the running for the “best place on earth.”

Take that Disneyland!
