Working in the PR industry you get to meet different people from all walks of life. Yes, I am still a rookie to the biz, but even so I have already been fortunate enough to meet and work with some inspirational clients from a range of industries, including:
- Equilter -who knew quilting is still so hip?
- SpyderLynk - turns out you can teach an old dog new tricks (ahem print advertising)
- Waxing the City -I’m Hispanic, enough said.
Now, what do all these companies have in common? Drum roll please…they were started by women. Not surprising at all considering that women are starting businesses at nearly two times the rate of men and this rate is staying strong even in a recession!
This got me thinking: are women entrepreneurs different than their male counterparts? Turns out the answer is yes. Lucky for us, there is Ladies Who Launch, a great resource for women with dreams of starting their own businesses.
Ladies Who Launch is a national new media forum that caters to the feminine approach to launching a business. LWL is also the first new media company of its kind that provides resources and connections for women entrepreneurs.
Colorado is fortunate to have a Ladies Who Launch Denver/Boulder chapter, which is lead by Ricki Booker and Olivia Omega Logan.
In the past few months dozens of Boulder and Denver women have taken the LWL Incubator Intensive Workshop which helps create a vision, clarity and action in order to make entrepreneurial dreams come true.
So why are Denver area women launching businesses in a recession? Check out these facts, compliments of Olivia Omega Logan:
• With job security hitting rock bottom, women are launching now to have more security, freedom and control over their schedules.
• This is the time to bootstrap; family income and dynamics are changing, many women launch to create new revenue streams and make money doing what they love.
• Lower startup costs. Essential business equipment such as computers have significantly dropped in price.
• Talent is less expensive. With the U.S. jobless rate hovering over 7% and more layoffs to come, the talent pool is much deeper with unrealistic salary expectations.
If you are a woman looking to take a dream, business or project and move it forward, I highly recommend looking into a membership with LWL. Joining the LWL local community in Denver/Boulder allows women to find connections, resources and answers in one place, get valuable referrals for products and services and connect with a like-minded community. Be sure to follow the local chapter on Twitter @LWLColorado for free tips.
I myself recently attended a speaking event, “Write Your Book Already,” featuring Jen Sincero, best-selling author of The Straight Girl’s Guide to Sleeping With Chicks and the semi-autobiographical novel Don’t Sleep With Your Drummer. The idea of writing a book always intrigued me, but I assumed I couldn’t because I wasn’t an award winning author My perspective took a 180 turn after sitting in a room of 20+ women who shared their stories and book ideas. After being surrounded by such great women, I was inspired to start something of my own.
“Women who invest in their own dreams or goals, whether inside a company or while launching on their own, are more likely to earn higher incomes, have higher self-esteem and feel more overall satisfaction with their lives.” – From the best-selling book Ladies Who Launch: Embracing Creativity and Entrepreneurship As a Lifestyle.
